THE SHIFT

The Shift are Phoebe Killdeer & Ole Wulfers.

The Shift’s use of sonic space dips you

momentarily in a parallel dream

filled with familiarity and warmth.

Storytelling through experimental

gestures and abstract instrumentation,

they seem to sketch and carve away at

the sonic vibrations all around brushing

diverse genres without the need

to categorize.

Life Goes Through You is a waltz that sounds like an old music box. Double bass, vibraphone - arpeggios and dense vocals create a melancholic mood supported by recordings of sea surf and buckets being dragged rhythmically across the floor. The siren-like singing in the chorus forms a euphoric counterpoint. The song tells of the traces that life leaves behind over time. It expresses the idea of life as a series of fleeting, often chaotic moments that pass through and change us.
Life goes through you describes the disorienting and sometimes imperfect nature of human existence. Despite these challenges, there is a robust heartbeat that carries us forward - meaning that no matter what happens, we keep on going, through the ups and downs of life, and this perhaps emphasizes the perseverance and the creative power of the human spirit.

The Shift are Phoebe Killdeer & Ole Wulfers.

Ole Wulfers (Party Diktator / Kapaikos) and Phoebe Killdeer (Nouvelle Vague / Pk & The Short Straws) met in Berlin 2012 and started working together on compositions for theatre plays and dance performances. They recorded their first album ‘The Piano’s playing the Devils tune' in 2016 and are planning to release their second album ‘All is going well’ on 28/02/2025, which features the collaboration of Sven Mühlender (Mixing engineer, Sound designer, owner and founder of Golden Gate Club, Berlin, Sound dep. for ARTE concerts), Mareike Hube (Trombone), Lukas Pfeiffer (Violin, Viola), Raphael Seguinier (Drums) & Julien Decoret (Double bass, Vibraphone), Oz Fritz (Mixing engineer) and Cem Oral (Mastering engineer).

Brimming with atmospheric contrasts, All Is Going Well moves effortlessly through an eclectic blend of electronic music, pop, musique concrète, bubblegum, and singer-songwriter sensibilities. At its core, All Is Going Well remains a concept album, threading a compelling narrative throughout its 12 tracks. The album plays like a radio play — cinematic, deeply emotional, and full of introspective moments. With its dreamy yet grounded atmosphere, it explores the human condition, merging the universal theme of home with existential musings on life and death.

Phoebe Killdeer & The Shift  with Maria De Medeiros ‘The piano’s playing the devils tune’ (2016).

Phoebe Killdeer & The Shift is the collaboration between Phoebe Killdeer (Nouvelle Vague, The Short Straws) with experimental musicians Thomas Mahmoud (SFX, The Nest, Tannhäuser Sterben & das Tod, Von Spar) and Ole Wulfers (Kapaikos, Party Diktator), supported by actress and singer Maria de Medeiros (i.e. »The Saddest Music in the World«, »Pulp Fiction«).

»The Piano’s Playing The Devils Tune« is »free music« in a most emphatic sense: The interplay between the abstract instrumentation on the one hand, equally recalling genres as diverse as noise rock, bass music and musique concrète, as well as the intimate, concrete humanity of the sound on the other hand establishes a sprawling sonic space that gravitates around the haunting vocal passages of Killdeer and de Medeiros. »The Piano’s Playing The Devils Tune« thereby succeeds in combining a decidedly experimental gesture with an urgent, uncanny familiarity and warmth; a precise sense of composition with an almost lavish casualness.

Phoebe Killdeer & The Shift do not resolve the numerous paradoxes that mark »The Piano’s Playing The Devils Tune«: The result is an equally challenging and rewarding album that in fact—as played out as this predicate may be—truly defies categorization. Devils tunes.

PK & The Shift are Phoebe Killdeer (Words, percussion, voice and fields recordings), Thomas Mahmoud-Zahl (Beats, electronics, voice, tape machine, typewriter, piano and field recordings) and Ole Wulfers (Double bass, guitar, bass, theremin, mandolin, hacked instruments and field recordings).

In collaboration with Maria de Medeiros (voice).
